Why Presentation Skills Training Is No Longer Enough
For years, organisations have invested heavily in presentation skills training.
And whilst there is real value in learning how to deliver a presentation, the reality is that very few people spend most of their working week presenting.
Instead, they are:
Leading meetings
Influencing stakeholders
Explaining technical information
Speaking under pressure
Contributing ideas
Representing their organisation externally
Communicating across teams, cultures and countries
These are the communication moments that shape careers and leadership. They require much more than presentation skills. They require confident, effective communication.
A Different Conversation
Recently, Simply Voice was approached by the Women in Data Centre Network at Amazon Web Services EMEA.
The original brief was to support women across the network in developing greater confidence and communication skills. However, as conversations progressed, it became clear that these challenges extended far beyond one group. The session was opened to colleagues across the wider organisation, with more than 130 professionals joining from across the EMEA region.
What struck me most was that the request wasn't for another presentation skills workshop.
They wanted something different.
They wanted their people to become stronger communicators.
The conversations centred around challenges such as:
Speaking too quickly under pressure.
Holding back in meetings despite having valuable ideas.
Finding the confidence to contribute without over-speaking.
Communicating effectively across different cultures, different languages and audiences.
Presenting externally at schools, community events and industry engagements.
Developing greater confidence and presence in everyday communication.
That is a very different brief.
Because communication doesn't begin when someone walks onto a stage.
It begins every time they open their mouth.
The Shift We Need to Make
Most communication happens in everyday moments. The project update. The difficult conversation. The leadership meeting. The stakeholder discussion. The spontaneous question you weren't expecting. The media interview. The moment you need to explain a complex idea simply.
These are the moments that determine how others experience your leadership.
Yet many organisations continue to invest primarily in presentation skills, overlooking the thousands of conversations that happen every single day.
At Simply Voice, we believe communication should be developed as a leadership capability—not simply a presentation skill.
That means helping people:
Speak with clarity under pressure.
Get to the point without losing warmth.
Adapt their communication to different audiences.
Build confidence in meetings.
Develop greater vocal presence.
Lead with authenticity rather than performance.
The Results
One of the most encouraging parts of the session wasn't simply the attendance, it was the level of engagement.
Despite busy schedules and competing priorities, participants stayed for the full session, actively engaging throughout. That tells me something important.
When people see communication as a practical leadership skill rather than another presentation course, they engage differently.
The feedback afterwards reinforced that.
-"What a great training! Thank you so much. It was a great experience for me! Very delighted. Really enjoyed the masterclass with Clodagh. It was relaxed, interesting and gave me a few useful tips on speaking more clearly and confidently. Definitely glad I joined."
— "Great! In just one session it was possible to learn a lot with fun!"
-"Amazing group session given by Simply Voice!"
The Future of Leadership Communication
Technical expertise will always matter. Knowledge will always matter. Experience will always matter.
But increasingly, leaders are being recognised not only for what they know, but for how effectively they communicate it.
The organisations investing in communication today are not simply creating better presenters.
They are developing leaders who contribute more confidently, collaborate more effectively, communicate more clearly and create greater influence across their organisations.
Because when people find their voice, they don't just communicate better.
They lead better.
At Simply Voice, we believe communication is one of the most underdeveloped leadership skills in organisations today. We partner with organisations to move beyond presentation skills, helping leaders and teams communicate with greater clarity, confidence and impact in the moments that matter most—meetings, stakeholder conversations, presentations and everyday leadership.
